DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

A Dougherty County School bus driver has been fired for leaving an elementary student on the bus.

The student was on the bus for eight to 10 minutes.

The student is okay, but school officials say the driver did not follow protocol.

The Lincoln Elementary gifted student fell asleep on the way back from a field trip three weeks ago.

Drivers are supposed to walk up and down the aisle, looking on and under all seats, before they leave their bus at the end of every trip.

Assistant Superintendent for support services Jack Willis says bus driver Juanita Drake did not do that.

Willis says he is thankful the bus was in the school yard, and the child was found quickly.

But Willis says what Drake did is not acceptable.
