THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A Republican south Georgia state lawmaker is going against her party's leaders on an important issue.
District 173 Representative Darlene Taylor said she does not support Amendment One on the current ballot.
The Opportunity School District proposal pushed by the governor would allow the state to take over chronically failing schools.
"I did find some problems that I had with that amendment, so I'm not supporting that amendment. I think it would have been better served for those failing schools to have help through the states superintendents of schools and the states school board not necessarily through the governor's office," said Taylor.
Taylor's district covers Thomas, Grady, and Decatur Counties.
She's being challenged by Democrat Tommy Hill, a Thomasville insurance agent.
