A 70 year old woman died in a fire that broke out Wednesday morning, in the 600 block of East Third Avenue.
Authorities identified the woman as Alneatha Whitfield.
Her name was withheld until family was notified.
Firefighters arrived at 9:45 a.m. and reported heavy smoke and fire coming from a side window. A total of 16 fire units and 25 fire personnel were on the scene, and the fire was under control at 10:15 a.m.
They had a report that an elderly citizen was inside, and firefighters started an aggressive fire attack and search and rescue efforts to locate her, but they were hampered by limited access and excessive storage in the home.
The fire is currently under investigation; however, it does not appear to be suspicious.
"We are all saddened by this loss of life," said Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome. "As always, our highly-trained firefighters responded quickly to the emergency call and made every effort to identify and evacuate any individuals inside."
