ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A local organization is teaching young girls about the importance of their vote.
Girls Inc. of Albany kicked off its "she votes" initiative.
A national campaign that promotes civic engagement and educates young girls on the impact they have on public policy.
Girls participate in activities that introduce them to voting, engaging with local city officials and attending local school board and city commission meetings.
"It's been a good experience for me because I get to learn the importance of voting and how we should vote for a better change in the world," said Mekayla Peters.
"Know that it's very important that they have a voice, that is heard by voting to bring about change and having a right leader in place," Girls Inc. Executive Director Wilena McClain.
The girls will participate in a mock voter registration and presidential election one week before the general election.
