ALBANY, GA (WALB) - People gathered in Albany Sunday afternoon to commemorate the renaming of a Jackson Heights Elementary School.
The name is now officially "Robert H. Harvey Elementary School."
Earlier this year, former students of Harvey, the first principal of the school, petitioned the Dougherty County school board to rename the school in honor of him.
The school board voted to do so in April, following Harvey's passing.
"We have many community members who went to school here with Mr. Harvey; parents, teachers who went to school here with Mr. Harvey, Now we're afforded the opportunity to teach their kids, their nieces, nephews, their grandkids, so it's a very historic day for the Robert Harvey Community," said Principal John I. Davis.
Harvey is remembered by former students as a father figure - a strict disciplinarian who made sure African American students received an equal education.
