ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Liberty House Shelter held its first self-defense class Thursday night.

Experts demonstrated personal protection techniques showing women how to escape if a man holds them, grabs their hair or chokes them.

"It's extremely important, statistics show that as of this year already there have been 14 deaths related to domestic violence just in the state of Georgia. So it's really important for persons to learn personal protection to prevent themselves from being a victim," said Rhonda Cantrell, Liberty House Shelter advocate.

Liberty House will hold more events throughout the month, including a 5k run and walk at Darton College October 22nd.
