THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Thomasville firefighters are encouraging residents to check the dates on their smoke detectors.

As part of Fire Prevention Week they want to bring awareness to the dangers of not having a working smoke detector.

They said it's simple to check your smoke detector.

A couple minutes of time could save your life.

"Its not only important to have smoke detectors in your home. You have to check the date to make sure they are still good. 10 years is the life expectancy of a smoke detector," said Tim Connell, Fire Marshall.

Firefighters said they'll install smoke detectors in homes at no cost.
