DAWSON, GA (WALB) - Busy highway 520 through much of south Georgia has a new name.
The Purple Heart Highway runs from Chattahoochee County to Dougherty County.
On Wednesday, it was dedicated to remember those who were wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military.
Signs were posted along the highway.
The dedication comes thanks to an effort by the United States Daughters of 1812.
"It became my mission, my warriors heart mission to do something. I can't call their names, there are too many, but I wanted them to know that somebody cared, somebody would never forget the sacrifice that has been made," said U.S. Daughters of 1812 Sargent of Arms Ann Garner.
Garner worked in family readiness, trained as a marine and later went on to the national guard.
She saw the sacrifice that troops, including her husband, made everyday and she doesn't want them to be forgotten.
