ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Exchange Club of Albany honored some top first responders on Friday.

Captain Billy Davis was honored as the Lee County Firefighter of the Year.

Pete Radano was named the Paramedic of the Year of Lee County.

The Albany Firefighter of the Year was Tiwana Maples, who in June, did the Heimlich maneuver on a fellow firefighter at their station when he was choking on food and saved his life.

Maples worked for years to meet her goal of becoming a firefighter, and said that's why this honor means so much.

"I just love helping people, and in my heart I just knew that that was what I wanted to do. So I just didn't quit. I didn't give up, until I actually achieved my goal," said Maples.

The entire EMS department was named the Paramedic of the Year for Dougherty County, the club said the entire team deserved the honor collectively.
