SWGA hotels booked ahead of Hurricane Matthew

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Hotels throughout South Georgia are filling up fast because of Hurricane Matthew.

Many south Georgia hotels have extra workers on duty to help people who evacuated their homes, and hotel managers in Valdosta say all their rooms are booked. 

Some phones have been ringing for three days straight. Hampton Inn has 184 rooms, and there are no vacancies tonight.  The manager says it's just heartbreaking-- having to turn people away in a time when they really need shelter.  

Customers are walking through the doors and calling on the phone faster than employees can help them.

As people evacuate from Florida and other places on the east coast, many hotels say they are completely booked for the weekend. "We're always prepared and our associates are ready to take care of all the guests and the evacuees. We are fully staffed and ready to go," said Tina Wilson, General Manager, Courtyard Valdosta. 

In a time when taking shelter is the most important – some hotels even say they are making accommodations for fleeing families. "We're now accepting pets, which we're not a pet friendly hotel, we only service those with service animals," said Jade Walton, Asst. General Manager Hampton Inn Valdosta.

Turning away people because they have reached capacity is something hotel manager Jade Walton says is the hardest thing. "That they may have to seek hotels or places to stay that are four hours away and they just have to continue driving. So it's really hard to hear that frustration in peoples' voices and that uncertainty that they feel," said Walton.

Almost all the hotels off I-75 are full, and hotels are far as Atlanta say they also have no vacancies. "They see the hotel sign and they just exit and they are going from hotel to hotel to hotel. That disappointment just builds when there is no room for them."

This hurricane season has been a busy one for South Georgia.

Allowing hotels to have a plan in place for when people start to come in. "We just went through Hermine a few weeks ago and I was in the market when Katrina hit and all that so I was ready and my staff was ready," said Wilson.

Millions of people have been ordered to evacuate so lots of people are on the road searching for a place to stay.
