ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is promoting national breast cancer awareness month in October.
Each year the hospital gives away 100 free 3-D mammograms for uninsured women.
This year, they are already booked.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women.
The American Cancer Society recommends women between 40 and 44 start getting mammograms.
Phoebe officials encourage women who haven't had one recently to make an appointment with their health care provider.
"This is certainly one of those cancers that we know that if we can detect it at an early stage, that is when the cancer is very small, and before it's had a chance to spread to the lymph nodes under the arm or other parts of the body, that the chances of a cure are significantly better," said Phoebe Oncology Administrative Director Clif Buell.
The hospital treats more than 200 breast cancer patients each year.
