ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County District Attorney office is warning about a fraud scheme being pulled by several used car salesmen in Albany. At least 60 people have had their money stolen. But Investigators believe there are many more victims, and they are looking for them.
Two used car salesmen have been arrested so far, and arrest warrants has been issued for another salesman at three different used car dealerships.
Investigators say the scheme is the car salesman sells you a car, but they never legally had the right to sell it, or the title. Many people who bought used cars may not realize yet they are crime victims.
"You bought a car and you keep getting the run around about getting the title and tag," said Edwards. "Generally you are given a drive out tag on a continuing basis."
Prosecutors say the customers are illegally driving their vehicles, and making payments for a fraudulently sold vehicle.
The District Attorney and Sheriff's Office is looking for they suspect many more victims.
If you think you might be one, call the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Investigators at 431-3222. Investigators say they expect to make more arrests and file more charges in this fraud scheme.
