Loose trailer blamed in deadly Lowndes collision

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

A man was killed on impact in a head-on collision with a trailer hauling farm equipment, Thursday afternoon about 5:30. 

Walter Clayton, 63, of Sparks, was pulling a trailer north on Cat Creek Road, just south of New Bethel Road, when the trailer came loose from his pickup truck.

The trailer went into the oncoming lane, and hit the 1996 Dodge Stratus driven by Gary Cantrell, 58, of Valdosta.

Cantrell was killed on impact. His passenger, Lawrence Robinette,38, of Nashville, sustained minor injuries.  

The road was closed for two hours.

Charges are pending in junction with the completion of the Troop H SCRT investigation, according to the State Patrol.
