Tift Regional 'Steps Out' on Tuesday

TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation's Stepping Out for Your Heart event turns 10 this year. Organizers are preparing for the annual fundraiser that will take place early next week.

The Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation would love to see the community's involvement with this year's event, at the family life center here at the first baptist church on Love Avenue at 5:00 next Tuesday.

Organizers are calling it a fun, family event, with slides, bounce houses, karaoke, as well as a champion walk to honor the community's heart champions who've suffered from heart disease or stroke.

The money raised at this event will go towards purchasing EKG machines and automated external defibrillators. The foundation has already purchased several of these machines which are placed all throughout the city, mainly at locations where there's a lot of activity so like a rec center, schools, gyms.

The machines help those who go under cardiac arrest and could possibly save a life. So those with the foundation want to make sure that the community knows how to use them.

"We want to train people how to use the units, where the units are located, and we want a heart healthy community," said Tift Regional Foundation Executive Director Mandy Brooks.

One of the machines actually saved an area teacher earlier this year. She experienced cardiac arrest during a faculty meeting and luckily a defibrillator was nearby, so organizers are proud of the investments.
