ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

One state lawmaker hopes residents will vote against a constitutional amendment that would allow the state to take over failing schools.

Albany State Representative Winfred Dukes opposes the Opportunity School District proposal.

He said that it would take away power from locally elected officials, and he wants the state to focus on other methods that have helped struggling schools in the past

"The state came in, addressed school systems that were low preforming along with the local leaders. They brought those schools back up to par. But never did the state come in to try and takeover the schools in those communities," said Dukes.

The amendment will be on the November 8 ballot.
