TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -

A construction worker was hit on I-75 S in Tift County early Tuesday morning, but is recovering.

Officials said they are surprised at the number of people who are not aware that laws are in place in work zones.

They hope drivers will become more aware on the roads to keep these preventable accidents from happening.

"People fly by on a two lane road. They fail to move over on a two lane road. That's dangerous and we've had numerous fatalities," said GSP post commander, John VanLandingham.

The fatality number has doubled over the summer months and the state patrol said there are laws you should follow whenever you see labor or emergency vehicles.

"We're having a lot of fatalities involving road workers, fireman, ambulance drivers in recent years. That's the reason they had to pass this law to try and get a grasp and reduce it,"said VanLandingham.

There are laws in place you should follow  whenever you see labor or emergency vehicles.

The 'Move Over Law' was created in 2001 to help limit the amount of deaths for workers on the side of roads.

Officials said the best way to stay aware is to make sure that you are focused on the road.

They said one of the biggest problems is drivers do not limit distractions.

"This day and time, there are a lot of distractions. Main one being cell phones usage. People are paying attention to everything but what's in front of them and just driving," said VanLandingham.
