AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

The Sumter County School System is a step closer to getting a new superintendent.

The school board recently named Dr. Torrance Choates as the sole finalist.

He's currently the Principal and Superintendent at the Baker County School.

"It's good to get, well we're not there yet but we're certainly moving along in the process of getting somebody in place full-time," said Sumter County School Board Chairman Dr. Michael Busman.

The system must wait two weeks before formally hiring Dr. Choates.

Dr. Larry Walters has served as interim superintendent since January.

School leaders also continued their search for a site to build a new high school.

Official said they need an upgraded, modern school, and they want to combine the 10th through 12th grade campus and the 9th grade academy into one location.

They hope to buy around 100-acres of land.

E-SPLOST revenue will pay for most of the school which leaders hope will open in three years.
