(WALB) - Georgia State Patrol troopers are concerned after the number of fatalities on Georgia roadways during the Labor Day holiday period increased from last year.
In 2015 there were 9 fatalities on Georgia roads.
In the 2016 holiday period, from Friday through Monday, there were 13 fatalities.
"A lot of that could be attributed to distracted driving. The weather. We had a hurricane pass through the area. That might have been one of the contributing factors to the wrecks also. We did have a lot of consumption of alcoholic beverages during the holiday period, too," said Sgt. John VanLandingham of GSP.
The Georgia State Patrol made 297 DUI arrests during the holiday period.
They handed out 8,239 citations and 10,996 warnings.
