LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

If you hire someone to help you clean up and make repairs, you need to make sure you check them out.

Lowndes County officials said unlicensed contractors and scammers often show up following bad storms.

They said you should only hire licensed workers and you should never pay for the work up front.

"We will have people who will come through in kind of a handyman sort of fashion and they will promise to do work for you but they will need the money upfront to purchase the materials, they will take your money and you will never see them again," said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County Public Information Officer.

Local government agencies are available if you need help verifying a licensed individual.
