(WALB) - Five Red Cross shelters are scheduled to be open in Georgia Thursday night as southwestern counties prepare for Hurricane Hermine to make landfall.
The shelters will provide immediate emergency need to those affected by the storm. And will offer a safe place to stay and food to eat.
Red Cross encourages folks heading to an emergency shelter to bring personal items for each family member such as prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and important documents.
People are also reminded to bring diapers, formula, toys and other items for children and family members with unique needs.
There were already close to thirty people here at the Mathis City Auditorium in Valdosta around 10 p.m. Thursday.
The shelter could be the safest place for many people, especially those who live in mobile homes.
"This is a safe place for people to go to get out of the wind, get out of the weather. You know, I don't know what the rain is going to do but we want everyone to be safe. We don't want people out there staying in a house that may not be safe," said Shelter Manager Chris Staples.
