LANIER CO., GA (WALB) -

GSP officials responded to a head on collision on US 221 near Tanner Lane in Lanier County Thursday morning.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. and was between a Volkswagen Passat driven by Louis Thompson, 22, and a Ford F-150 driven by Alberto Vargas, 70.

Vargas had three passengers, Fernando Baltazar, 62, Christian Rodriguez, 25, and Julio Perez.

According to officials, Thompson crossed into the wrong lane and hit Vargas on the passenger side of his truck, which caused the truck to flip.

Perez died at the scene from his injuries.

Thompson was transported to SGMC with injuries to his pelvis and head.

Vargas and Baltazar were transported to SGMC for their injuries and are in critical condition.

Lifeflight was called but unable to respond because of weather.

Troopers suspect Mr. Thompson was fatigued and possibly fell asleep while driving.

Charges will be pending until the investigation of the accident is complete. The roadway was closed until approximately 10 a.m.
