PELHAM, GA (WALB) -

Folks in Pelham now have a place to go to further their education for free.

Thursday was the first day of GED classes at the Donnie Cochran Community Complex in Pelham.

Southern Regional Technical College is offering the free classes for adult education.

Before now, folks had to travel out of town to take the class.

"This is a beginning. This is a start for people," said Director of Adult Education Melissa Burtle. "And we hope, by getting their GED, they'll either go on to post secondary education, or maybe even get a better job, some people just come because they want to help their kids with homework.  So it's just a wonderful opportunity for them"

Orientation for new students is every Thursday at 9 a.m. or 1 p.m.

For more information or to speak with an instructor call (888) 205-3449 or visit southernregional.edu/ged.
