TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -

A scam alert was issued on Wednesday from the Tift County Sheriff.

He said that his office got at least 10 complaints Wednesday about an IRS phone scam.

One resident recently fell victim to the scam and lost almost $9,500.

Sheriff Gene Scarbrough said that the IRS will never call you and demand payment for taxes they claim you owe.

"When you get that call and they say they're with the IRS, hang up because you know they're not because they do not call people on the phone, they send you letters," said Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough.

If you think you have fallen for a scam, you should contact your local law enforcement immediately.
