A 15-year-old student was arrested after a gun was found in a trash can at Cook County High School.
Officials were called to the school at around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon after reports that a student had a handgun on campus.
Cook County officers, school administrators and the School Resource Officer investigated the report and found a Beretta in a garbage can.
The student was arrested and taken to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
Officials determined that the gun was brought inadvertently by the student.
When other students learned about the gun, they told administrators, and the student threw it away.
A preliminary investigation showed that the gun was never brandished or used as a threat.
The student was charged with one count of bringing a weapon onto school grounds and referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
