ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty District Attorney is asking the community to help get guns out of the hands of gang members.
Because of a recent wave of gang-involved shootings, the D-A says people need to step up and help law enforcement take their guns.

District Attorney Greg Edwards says he wants to take the teeth away from gangs, by taking their guns.

Law enforcement experts say gang members who are not allowed to have guns, because they are on probation or too young, don't keep their guns in their homes or on them, they hide them.  The D.A. is asking concerned family members or friends to tell investigators where those guns are, to keep their loved ones out of  trouble.

Edwards said "This gang banging that's going on where people and houses are being shot up. If we can take the teeth away from the gang members, that's one way I think we can get some safety and control."
Albany Police Gang Unit Commander Lt. Antonio Fletcher said "We are desperately trying to get these illegal guns off the street. And any help they can give us, we'd appreciate it."
The D.A. is asking the community to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 436-TIPS or any law enforcement agency, tell them where guns that are not legally owned are being kept.

They say if you get the guns away from gang members, that could keep them from being involved in legal problems, or even keep them from being shot.
