ALBANY, GA (WALB) - As the Zika threat increases, the National Institutes of Health has launched a human clinical trial of a vaccine.
At least 80 volunteers are expected to participate in three study sites.
It could be 18 months before a vaccine is available, so for now, public health officials in southwest Georgia urge residents to protect themselves against mosquitoes and make smart decisions.
"We all need to be diligent in trying to avoid Zika infection and that includes making wise travel plans," said Southwest Georgia Health Director Charles Ruis.
Last week, the CDC issued a travel advisory for Florida's Miami Beach because of Zika cases there.
