DAWSON, GA (WALB) - The Dawson City Council has formally asked the town's mayor to go on voluntary suspension.
Christopher Wright has been indicted for several sex crimes against children, but has refused to step aside from his post as mayor.
A letter from the Dawson City County was delivered to Christopher Wright by the city manager and police chief Friday afternoon.
Council members voted 4 - 2 in a meeting Thursday night to ask for his voluntary suspension, saying it would reduce the public spectacle and calm the atmosphere in the community.
"They felt the circus probably that would surround some commission hearing and the trial that the mayor may have," said Tommy Coleman, Dawson City Attorney.
Mayor Wright would continue to be paid by the city if he accepts the voluntary suspension, until his trial, or until his term ends in December 31.
