SUMTER CO., GA (WALB) -

Sumter County Sheriff's deputies are looking for any suspects responsible for a church burglary that happened Thursday night.

Deputies say someone broke into the New Bethel Church on Highway 30 West.

A church member drove by to check on the church and noticed the door had been pried open.

Deputies say a stove was taken from the church. This was one of several recent church burglaries where appliances were taken.

Officials want churches to take extra precaution.

"It's been a lot of appliances taken from these churches that have been burglarized here in the past several weeks. So again we're just encouraging churches to keep check on your buildings....even if it's time when you normally don't go by and check...to go by and check to make sure they're secure," said Colonel Eric Bryant.

Colonel Bryant says churches need to be checked on regularly and anything out of the ordinary needs to be reported.

Anyone with additional information on the burglary is asked to call the Sumter Co. Sheriff's Office at 229-928-4624.
