LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - Leesburg's historic depot will soon be revived thanks to nearly $300,000 in federal funding.
On Wednesday, dozens of people were at the depot to celebrate the groundbreaking.
Congressman Sanford Bishop said that the building has been sitting idle for many years and looks forward to seeing the renovation completed.
"We are just happy to be here. This is truly a day to celebrate. To celebrate the history of Leesburg, and to bring to life this building that will be a community facility where meetings can be held," said Bishop.
Bishop said that Leesburg and Smithville started when the railroads connected Americus and Albany.
