DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

Students go back to school tomorrow in Dougherty County, and there are still teaching openings.

This afternoon the school department confirmed 11 open positions.

Six of those positions have been filled with long-term substitutes.

The school department says they were getting notices from teachers as late as this morning saying they would not be back.

Each school principal is handling the open positions differently whether that is merging classes or hiring substitutes.

The school system assures they are looking for the best candidates.

"We are a people organization, fundamentally," said Dougherty County Schools Spokesman J.D. Sumner. We deal with people as teachers. We deal with people as students and in order to get the best schools that we can we need to have the best people in place,"

The number of openings could change as early as tomorrow.

Some schools said they were looking at potential candidates today.
