PELHAM, GA (WALB) -

Five vacant former Walmart buildings in the area will soon become new Dollar General Stores.

One of them is in Pelham where residents are excited by the news, six months after the Walmart shut down.

"It's been a convenience for me. It was right next door," said resident Richard Taylor. "I didn't like that they closed it down, but it is what it is.

But on Thursday, the future of the vacant building looked promising.

"Last Friday afternoon, we received a phone call from Walmart instructing us to discontinue utility services to this building," explained Pelham City Manager Jim Hedges.

Hedges said that phone call was quickly followed by another phone call, this time from a different company.

"Then on Monday of this week, we received a phone call from Dollar General instructing the city to provide utilities effective the 29th of July," said Hedges.

It's a move Dollar General is making in six locations across the state.

The company announced it has purchased 41 former Walmart Express stores in 11 states, in anticipation of relocating 40 existing Dollar General stores.

It's a change that many residents like Arthur Jackson are excited about.

"It made me feel good because it needed to be renovated instead of just sitting here and going to waste," explained resident Arthur Jackson. "And it's nice for another company to come in and take over."

The company said that the new stores are designed to make shopping easier with more space, which is a welcomed change compared to the long lines at the current store.

"Sometimes it frustrates you, but you just have to wait your turn," said Jackson.

But not anymore. Dollar General said that the newly relocated stores will also offer something the current Pelham Dollar General does not, fresh meat and produce.

"A place where you can stop and get just about everything you're going to need for your dinner or for your household," explained Hedges.

In the area, Dollar General will also open in former Walmart stores in Ashburn, Lakeland, Pearson and Donalsonville.
