LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

A nationwide clear the shelter event helped Lee County's animal shelter clear their dog kennels for the first time.

WALB teamed up with Lee County and three other shelters for the day-long event Saturday. Lee County adopted out 12 dogs and 20 cats.

The shelters waived the adoption fees to help clear the kennels. Lee County said the turnout was great.

“It had two things. One, I think, is the animals found a home, and I also think that it helped out to regenerate the enthusiasm for our shelter,” said Animal Shelter Director Mike Sistrunk.

The Lowndes County Animal Shelter, Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society, and Best Friends Humane Society in Worth County also participated in the event.
