AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - Boys and Girls Club of Americus-Sumter County held its largest fundraiser of the year tonight.

Former President Jimmy Carter attended tonight's 18th Annual Steak and Stake Charity Dinner to benefit Boys and Girls Club.

It's a cause he and his wife Rosalynn Carter have supported for many years.

Club leaders say they're honored by that support and say they were happy with the large turnout.

"There are thousands of kids throughout Americus and Sumter County and pretty much all over the world. We're trying to save as many kids in Americus and Sumter County as possible," said Dr. Shirley Reese.

"This is one of the best things we can do in this entire nation to help our boys and girls to have a good life when they didn't have a good start," said President Carter.

The organization raised more than $20,000 in donations.
