VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A Valdosta Police officer remains in the hospital after he was shot, apparently targeted by a man who called 911 to report a supposed vehicle break-in.
"I heard several gun shots going off and it sounded like firecrackers going off," said resident Carrie Howard.
Howard said she was eager to find out what was going on just feet away from her front door.
"So I thought I'd be a little nosy and walk out the door and stand on the edge but then I realized someone had been shot," said Howard.
Howard shot a cell phone video, just moments after she heard the shooting.
Officers can be seen running by in their vests, and then someone being loaded into an ambulance.
"I came out here and stood and watched everything that was going on and I just kept seeing tons and tons of police cars," said Howard.
The shooting was a scary experience that neighbors said was uncommon.
"I've never encountered any problem while I've been out here and I know my daughter hasn't either," said Howard.
Residents living at Three Oaks Apartments were frightened after hearing gun shots and later seeing a heavy law enforcement presence outside of their windows.
"I realized it was something pretty major with everybody coming out here. I mean that was kinda scary just being right here this close to it and really not knowing what was going on if there was someone out there running around," said apartment resident Carrie Howard.
Neighbors in the apartment complex had two questions: "Why did the shooting happen?" and "Did the shooter live in the complex?"
The GBI is still investigating the incident, but said that residents should not be worried about their safety.
