ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany's first ever Vet Fest takes place on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at the VFW Post 2785.
Guests can expect live music, activities for children, a pool tournament, vendors, and plenty of delicious food.
Organizers worked on putting the event together for several weeks. They told WALB News 10 that they could not do it without support from the community.
Over 20 sponsors signed up to help with the event.
"We had no idea when we started that it was going to get this big and that we were going to get this much support," said event organizer Brian Shattles.
Doors open at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and the bands will begin playing at 12:00 p.m. The Donny Dawson Band is expected to play around 5:00 p.m.
Danny Dawson said he was excited when his band was asked to play during the event. Dawson mentioned that he's looking forward to playing for the community.
"Good country music, honky-tonk, foot stomping, get down and get ready. It's going to be a fantastic show," Dawson explained.
As for the price of admission, organizers said they're just asking for donations to help veterans and their families.
"It's that much easier. Folks if they want to give us money out of the kindness of their heart. Like what they hear and like what they see, that's better any day than just taking $10 here and $10 there. That's not what we're about," said VFW post commander Craig Jones.
The event will also include a VFW membership drive for those who have served in combat areas. To sign-up, be sure to bring a DD Form 214.
Organizers hope to have an even bigger event next year.
VFW Post 2785 is located at 315 Philema Road in Albany.
