DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) - Four people were rescued off the Flint River in South Dougherty County early Tuesday morning by Albany firefighters.
Fire Rescue Boat Number 2 found the two couples on Goat Island just after midnight, just north of the Mitchell County Line on the Flint River.
Firefighters said that the couples left the Marine Ditch Boat Landing around 7 p.m. Monday night in a kayak and a raft, bound for Punks Landing in Mitchell County. But they got lost when night fell, and they called for help.
Firefighters said that people boating on the Flint should use caution.
"Doing any adventures on the river, you need to know your surroundings. Because it's real dark and it's easy to get lost. As you can see by this case, that's what happened to them," said Assistant Chief Rubin Jordan with the Albany Fire Department.
Chief Jordan said the rescue boat was already on the River when the two couples called for help. It was staged below the downtown fireworks show for a safety watch.
