ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County animal control officers say it's likely many dogs and pets will run and escape their home on the Fourth of July, because of fear of fireworks.
Animal control, the Albany Humane Society, and most veterinarian offices are closed for the holiday. They say if a lost pet comes to your home, if you can shelter it until the Fifth, all those organizations will be back at work Tuesday.
Experts say the best advice on the Fourth Of July to pet owners is to take precautions early to keep your pet from running away.
The Dog Park Owner Donna Lesperance said "Most of all, is bring them in. Even if they are outside dogs, you need to bring them into a secure enclosure that they can not climb or dig out of. Because event the best dog is going to escape when it's scared."
Animal control says if your pet has run away over the holiday, post pictures on lost pet Social Media sites like "Peanut's Friends dot org" to help bring them home.
