ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Thirteen former high school dropouts received their GED Thursday night.
Literacy Connection targets parents who are in need, and provides a free program for them to further their education.
The graduates dropped out of high school for different reasons. Bobby McMillian said he was just young and immature.
He enrolled in the program a year ago, along with his fiancee, with his eyes set on this day. Family Literacy provides home visits, childcare and instruction to families like his for free.
Cheryl Calhoun is proud of the progression she has witnessed from McMillian.
"A lot of time our young men struggle with coming back to school, but he got over those struggles. He started being a role model and actually he ended up getting his GED before his girlfriend did."
"I'm their provider so I'm the key to the puzzle. So if I didn't have mine they wouldn't have theirs so they are my drive, this is what pushes me."
McMillian's fiancee has one more test and she will join him in completing the program.
