LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - Yathomas Riley, a former professional boxer charged with killing his wife, had another outburst in court Wednesday. His attorney says an insanity defense is his only defense with all the evidence.
Riley doesn't want to claim insanity though and said in open court that his attorney insulted and disrespected him. That attorney said multiple times the evidence is just too strong for any other type of defense.
The judge ordered him to sit down and threatened to continue the proceeding without him.
The judge denied a request of continuation filed by the defense attorney. The public defender wanted more time to prepare an insanity defense. He said Riley has issues in line with CTE—a brain issue associated with someone who takes blows to the head.
Riley openly disagreed and screamed that there is nothing wrong with him. At one point he said he was, "8-0. I don't take punches. I give punches."
His attorney alluded to video and other objective evidence that makes the case too hard to fight. Riley included another directive in his outburst—"I'm not going to be insulted and disrespected. He never even.. let me go back over here. Give me a different lawyer."
The trial will go on as planned Monday, June 20th, with jury selection. Riley is charged with killing his wife, Lisa Riley last July, and staging it as a suicide. Riley's ex-girlfriend, who he also claimed shot herself but survived, is expected to testify.
We'll be in the courtroom every day for the trial.
