AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Americus Police chief wants residents and businesses to know that new crime numbers prove the city is safe.
An error in reporting entering autos and simple assaults to the FBI inflated their burglary and aggravated assault numbers.
The misreporting gave folks an impression that crime was much worse in town.
The city has reached out to the FBI and is getting the crime numbers fixed. "We want people to feel safe. We want people who are looking at Americus to live and do business to know that this is very safe community to live in," said Americus Police Chief Mark Scott.
The chief wants to publicize the new crime stats. The fix cut the aggravated assaults and burglaries in half over the last three years.
