THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

A new breakthrough has been made in a reported rape investigation at a south Georgia YMCA.

A 16-year-old boy is now charged, but only with a misdemeanor.

A 15-year-old girl says the boy pulled her into a bathroom at the Butler Mason YMCA in Thomasville about 4 p.m. Saturday and assaulted her.

"The importance of making these charges is you have set a level of accountability," said Thomasville Police Captain Maurice Holmes. "You know it was a situation that occurred that shouldn't have. It occurred in pretty much a public place, it was a situation that though it was two kids, it should have been avoided."

Police say the teens were familiar with each other, but investigators aren't sure how well they actually knew each other.

The 16-year-old was charged with misdemeanor statutory rape and the case will be handled in juvenile court.
