Special Olympics athlete, Joseph "Joey" Willock and his parents, Chuck and Gerri, have been awarded the Special Olympics Georgia Distinguished Service Award as Outstanding Family of the Year.
They were presented with the award at the opening ceremony of the SOGA Summer Games in Atlanta recently.
Joey Willock was one of the first athletes for the ARPD in 2008 when the program started. Since then, he has participated in softball, bocce, basketball, volleyball, and his favorite sport, bowling.
In the eight years since he’s been competing at the masters-level, Joey has won numerous ribbons and medals.
Gerri and Chuck Willock travel to all of Joey’s competitions to cheer for him whether they are state, area, or local level games. Gerri serves on the Special Olympics ARPD Management Team; currently she is the fundraising chair. Chuck Willock is a Unified Partner with Joey in both bowling and bocce.
"For putting forth their time and effort, the Willock family is most deserving of this prestigious award. They support every sport and activity that our athletes participate in," said Marie Stamps, Special Olympics coordinator.
