VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office honored one of their own Wednesday with a Meritorious Service Award.
"Law enforcement works every day to make a difference in the community. It is great to be able to honor one of our own deputies who went above and beyond putting someone else's safety ahead of his own" said Sheriff Chris Prine.
Investigator John Mulvaney received the award after responding to a call May 21 at the Withlacoochee River.
Deputies from both Lowndes and Brooks Counties as well as EMS personnel were sent to "Spook Bridge" to assist an individual who accidentally shot himself in the foot.
Because of the injury, the victim could not walk.
First responders could not reach the victim from the Brooks County side of the river.
Mulvaney then crossed the river to the victim and carried him back across where EMS were waiting.
Sheriff Prine issued Mulvaney the award for his actions on that day.
