ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A crowd of proud parents greeted Thomasville High School world champions at the Albany airport Sunday night.

The students won the world finals in the Odyssey of the Minds competition.

The competition requires the teams to compete in critical thinking problems in an eight minute time frame.

The Thomasville City Schools students beat out more than 800 teams in Ames, Iowa for the first time in school history.

They improved on their 6th place finish last year.

"They are, they're great. You talk about students and you hear about all these things where they're violent this way and violent that way. This team is fantastic, true epitome of American students," said Former teacher Sharon Cernogorski.

Five of the core team members are graduating and attending college.

Another teacher will take over for Cernogorski next year.
