ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany teacher was appointed to Governor Nathan Deal's Teacher Advisory Committee. Jillian Lockette Mansfield is a third grade English teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
Mansfield was nominated by State Senator Freddie Powell Sims to make reforms and recommendations on the education system, focusing on teacher retention, and the "Move On When Ready" program.
"I just want to represent the voice of the teachers. Sometimes teachers feel like their voices aren't heard in government and politics. So I want to be the voice of the teacher because we work so closely with the students and I want to just make some suggestions for positive changes for our children," said Mansfield.
Mansfield is one of 30 educators on the committee.
Her first committee meeting with the governor will be on June 7.
