ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Darton name will live on after the college's merger with Albany State University.
There was a great turnout in front of the Student Center at Darton Thursday afternoon, as the presidents from both schools outlined plans for the future of the new Albany State University.
ASU President Art Dunning and Darton Interim President Richard Carvajal announced the naming of the new Darton College of Health Professions.
Carvajal spoke about the growing demand for health professionals in the region, He said that he believes this new college will address that demand.
"It's a simple message but I think it says very much about who we are trying to be and who we know we will be. It's really about taking two institutions, the absolute best of each institution, and out of them, creating something that's truly special and world class," said Dr. Carvajal.
Both presidents spoke about the importance of working together to offer additional resources to current and future students.
"We both have a lot to offer in the healthcare and the health professions, and when we combine those to areas, we have a very strong set of programs that we can offer to the people of this region, which means that we can have more economic vitality in the healthcare field," said Dr. Dunning.
The newly consolidated ASU will have a total of five colleges.
The other colleges include the College of Business, College of Arts and Humanities, College of Sciences and Technology and the College of Education.
The consolidation is expected to be complete in January of 2017.
