ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany's Police Chief said that he's streamlining his department by hiring Derrell Smith  as his new Assistant Chief.

After working his way up through the ranks at the department, Smith moved over to be the Assistant Administrator at the Recreation and Parks Department.

Chief Michael Persley said that Smith's experience with city budgets and management practices, as well as law enforcement, is what APD needs.

"To making sure that the resources that the citizens provide us through the taxpayers, we are making sure that these resources are used in the most adequate way," said Chief Persley.

Smith will be the department's only assistant chief.

Earlier this year, Chief Persley let two officers who held that rank go.
