ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The final Darton State baseball team proved it may be the best in program history after winning a trip to the World Series in dramatic fashion.
Denzell Gowdy stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded, and one out. He zipped the ball down the line giving Darton State a 6-5 walk-off victory over Dyersburg State.
The Eagles decided to Walk Colton Thomas to get to Gowdy, and the Worth County native made them pay.
"I knew they was going to walk him to get to me," said Gowdy. "But I was like hey, if they want me to win it, I'll do it."
This win marked the final Cavs game at Darton's baseball field, and was arguably the most exciting. The Cavs were down 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th, and ended up winning the East Central District Championship.
Head coach Scot Hemmings has been singing the praises of how great his team could be all year, and they proved it with three straight elimination game wins to keep their final season alive.
"I'm so proud of these boys," said Hemmings. "It was a team effort all year. We had big hits all year. And here we go, we're one of the last 10 teams in the country and that's an honor."
Darton State leaves for Grand Junction, Colorado on Wednesday morning. They will be one of 10 teams across the nation competing for a World Series title starting May 28th.
