TERRELL CO., GA (WALB) - A registered sex offender in Dawson has been arrested, accused of sexual exploitation of children.
Friday morning, Dawson Police went to the suspect's home on South Main Street, just across from the McDonald's, and arrested 64-year-old Curtis King for sexual exploitation of children.
The investigation began early in the year when children were visiting the home, which they should not have been.
"No they were not. He was a registered sex offender and not supposed to be in contact with children," said Dawson Police Captain Gene Shattles.
Investigators learned that King had taken a picture of a child, which is also illegal. In January, police searched King's home, seizing his computers and cell phones.
"GBI examined the computers we took on a search warrant back on January 12, and found child pornography on the computer. Most of the children appear to be under the age of 14," said Shattles.
King came to Terrell County in 2009 from Virginia, where in 1988 he was convicted of child sexual crime charges.
Sheriff's Officials say King has often not followed his registry requirements.
"Our deputies had went out several times looking for him, and he's never at the address he provided. And every time he would register he would list he did not own any computers," Terrell County Jail Administrator Sondra Walker.
Law enforcement said when they learned children might have been involved, they had to investigate.
"I believe and the other officers believed involved in the case that it may have been leading up to something more, and maybe we caught it in time," said Shattles.
King is being held in the Terrell County jail and will make his first appearance before a judge on Monday.
Dawson Police say their investigation is continuing, and more charges are expected.
