Did you know that Veterans State Park at Lake Blackshear is the busiest state park in the Georgia Parks system, with more than 640,000 visitors a year?

Tourism is a huge industry in Cordele and Crisp County, with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year coming to Lake Blackshear.

The Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club is undergoing a complete facelift, preparing for a huge summer of guests. After state budget crunches, now all 64 villa rooms,14 lodge rooms,10 cabins, and the conference center are getting spruced up in the more than one million dollar project.

By June, all the rooms at the villas will be repainted, tiled, and new furnishings. They promise the same friendly staff and service, just with newer and nicer surroundings.

"We've seen an influx of visitors this year. With spring coming early, gas prices going down, and everybody traveling again. Then even if you don't want to go far, just come out here," said Amanda Norris of the Lake Blackshear Resort.

Besides the water sports, the resort has weekly concerts at the Cypress Grill lots of weddings, and hosting conferences and meetings there of course is number one at Lake Blackshear, the fishing.

Officials say they are getting prepared for their two busiest events of the year.  July the Fourth, and Thomas the Train at the SAM Shortline Railroad.

Both will bring hundreds of visitors to the Lake Blackshear Resort and have already sold out the rooms.
